§ 17. Mr. Carmichael
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how many veterinary surgeons will be employed by the State Veterinary Service in 2002–03; and what the equivalent figures were in(a) 2000–01 and (b) 2001–02. [R] [46527]

§ Mr. Morley
As at February 2001, 301 veterinary surgeons were employed, of which 261 were field veterinary staff.

As at 31 March 2002, 311 permanent veterinary surgeons were employed, of which 275 are field veterinary staff.
No further recruitment of veterinary surgeons expected to take place in 2002–03.
