HC Deb 10 April 2002 vol 383 c286W
Norman Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how many wild caught non-human primates were imported into the United Kingdom in the last five years; for what purposes; and if she will make a statement. [48000]

Mr. Meacher

Imports of non-human primates are controlled under the European Commission Regulation dealing with the control in trade in endangered species. Our records show that 547 wild caught non-human primates were imported into the UK between 1 January 1997 and 31 December 2001.

The purposes of the imports were categorised as follows:

  • 247 breeding;
  • 2 personal;
  • 266 commercial;
  • 32 zoological collections.
