To ask the Solicitor-General how many successful prosecutions for incitement of racial hatred there have been. [9967]

The Solicitor-General

Records for prosecutions for incitement of racial hatred under part III of the Public Order Act 1986 have been kept only since 1988. Since then 42 defendants have been successfully prosecuted under the provisions of the Act. The number of applications for consent to prosecute for each year since 1988, the number of prosecutions arising and the convictions obtained are as summarised.
