To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills if she will take steps to ensure that the UK upper secondary school teachers starting salary meets the OECD mean average; and if she will make a statement. [8314]

[holding answer 26 October 2001]: School teachers' pay is based on recommendations made by the independent School Teachers' Review Body. They will take account of all relevant factors before recommending any changes. We consult all key stakeholders, including trade unions and employer representatives, before implementing changes.
