To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs if she has applied for EU aid to the cereals sector; and if she will make a statement. [7445]

[holding answer 15 October 2001]The UK Government have not applied for any EU aid for the cereals sector. An amount of optional agrimonetary compensation for the arable sector became available on 1 July 2001. We have until 31 October to inform the European Commission if we wish to make these payments.
