To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people have benefited from income tax relief as a result of purchasing a stakeholder pension. [7917]

All those who have contributed to a stakeholder pension will benefit from income tax relief—over 350,000 by 31 August 2001 according to the latest estimates from the Association of British Insurers. Provisional estimates of the number of contributors on whose behalf a repayment claim has been received by the end of July will be published on the Inland Revenue website at the end of the month.
