HC Deb 26 November 2001 vol 375 c670W
Mr. Jenkin

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the future of Commonwealth war graves in France in relation to the construction of the proposed new airport at Chaulnes. [18638]

Dr. Moonie

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), which has the responsibility for the maintenance of the graves of all British and Commonwealth troops who died during the two world wars and the memorials to those who have no known grave, has asked the French Government to provide more details about the proposals.

If the proposals do appear to affect war graves cemeteries containing British and Commonwealth graves, the CWGC will firmly resist any plans to disturb the war dead.
