HC Deb 22 November 2001 vol 375 c467W
Chris Grayling

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what plans she has to continue funding the reforms to the teaching profession after the initial two year period. [17133]

Mr. Timms

The special grant for threshold pay is already putting over £400 million per annum into the salaries of nearly 200,000 teachers. A new special grant will provide £250 million more for performance pay progression over the next two financial years. Special grants are for fixed periods. But the Government have always accepted that a new pay structure providing additional rewards for effective teachers means a substantial and permanent increase in the cost of teachers' pay. So our financial planning will continue to take account of that.
