HC Deb 21 November 2001 vol 375 cc321-2W
Mr. Sayeed

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what assessment she has made of the recent European Environment Agency analysis of smog levels in Europe; and if she will make a statement. [13909]

Mr. Meacher

Peak ozone levels in episodes of "summer smog" are declining as a result of significant emission reductions of ozone precursors in the UK and Europe over the past ten years or so Peak ozone levels should continue to decline as a result of the further measures which the UK and other European countries will take in accordance with the EC National Emission Ceilings Directive and the UNECE Gothenburg Protocol. There has not been as yet a decline in average ozone levels. The significance of this for public health is still under investigation.
