HC Deb 20 November 2001 vol 375 c182W
Lynne Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the membership of the coalition against International Terrorism and the contributions they are making. [13383]

Mr. Bradshaw

States across the world expressed their sorrow and outrage at the dreadful events of 11 September and there has been widespread acceptance of the need for an international coalition to tackle terrorism. UN Security Council resolution 1373 was passed unanimously on 28 September. It is the first resolution to impose obligations on all states to respond to a global threat to international peace and security. It focuses on two key areas: to suppress the financing of terrorism and to deny terrorists a safe haven from which to operate. All UN member states are bound by UNSCR 1373 to take measures against international terrorism. The present military campaign directed at Osama bin Laden and the Taliban regime has the support of all NATO allies who agreed unanimously to invoke Article 5 (the collective self-defence commitment at the core of NATO). A wide range of other countries also back the military campaign. For operational reasons we cannot disclose details of that support.
