HL Deb 20 November 2001 vol 628 c124WA
Baroness Ludford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What consideration they have given and what discussions they have had with the United States and other governments regarding the nature of any future government of Afghanistan in the event of the collapse of the present Taliban government, with particular regard to the role of women. [HL1233]

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Amos)

We are working closely with the UN Special Representative for Afghanistan, Lakhdar Brahimi, and a wide range of other interested governments and parties to help the Afghan people establish a broad-based government representative of all Afghans. As part of this process, UN Security Council Resolution No. 1378, unanimously adopted on 14 November, sets out a blueprint for such a government. This includes a call for the human rights of all Afghans, regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion, to be respected.
