HL Deb 14 November 2001 vol 628 c92WA
Lord Marlesford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What arrangements exist for the cancellation of driving licences of deceased persons. [HL1249]

Lord Falconer of Thoroton

Historically, DVLA has relied on being notified by relatives when a driving licence holder dies. If DVLA is not informed, the record will remain active on the database. However, DVLA has been working with the Office for National Statistics (ONS), resulting in periodic notifications from it. This enables a marker to be placed on records which is used to suppress reminders being generated at the expiry of a licence. This has also been useful in detection of fraudulent applications.
