HL Deb 08 November 2001 vol 628 cc38-9WA
Lord Kilclooney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is proposed to retain the United Kingdom's role as a Guarantor Power if Cyprus becomes a member of the European Union. [HL1054]

Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean

The Treaty of Guarantee, agreed at the time of Cyprus's independence in 1960, which provides for Britain, Greece and Turkey to act as Guarantor Powers, will not be affected by Cyprus's accession to the EU.
