To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) what the estimated cost to British businesses is of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive; [11858]
(2) what assessment she has made of the effects of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive. [11860]

The directive is currently in draft form and a full assessment of the costs and effects will not be possible until it is published in theOfficial Journal of the European Communities.
The Department of Trade and Industry submitted a partial Regulatory Impact Assessment on a previous draft of the proposal to the House on 2 October 2000. A copy of this was placed in the Library of the House.
