HC Deb 14 March 2001 vol 364 c609W
Mr. Willetts

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many children have been lifted out of poverty since May 1997; and if he will provide the basis for Ministers' calculation concerning the number of children who will be lifted out of poverty by the end of the present Parliament. [152432]

Dawn Primarolo

I have been asked to reply.

As a result of personal tax and benefit reforms announced in this Parliament, over 1.2 million children will be lifted out of poverty. This is an estimate, using the Treasury's tax benefit simulation model, of the impact of measures on the number of children living in households with income below 60 per cent. of the median.
