HC Deb 12 July 2001 vol 371 cc618-9W
23. Kevin Brennan

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what assessment she has made of how the national minimum wage is benefiting people in Wales. [2057]

Alan Johnson

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimated that 100,000 workers in Wales became entitled to a higher rate of pay when the national minimum wage (NMW) was introduced on 1 April 1999. The ONS estimates that around 90,000 workers in Wales will benefit from the increases in the NMW main rate and development rate to £4.10 and hour and £3.50 respectively on 1 October 2001.
