HC Deb 11 July 2001 vol 371 cc524-6W
Harry Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions when the proposed stakeholders meeting of London Underground and the Health and Safety Executive's review of the Public Private Partnership will take place, and in which location. [2730]

Mr. Jamieson

London Underground informs me that its stakeholders' safety meeting, originally scheduled for 26 June, was postponed at the request of Mr. Robert Kiley, while he conducted negotiations with the bidders for the PPP contracts. Mr. Kiley has now reported that he has been unable to reach agreement with the bidders which meets his objectives, and my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State has asked London Underground to proceed with plans for the modernisation of the Tube. A rescheduled stakeholders' meeting can be expected later in the summer as part of the renewed drive to provide the investment and renewal programme needed to create a 21st century Tube.

Safety will continue to be the first priority of London Underground. The Health and Safety Executive is currently undertaking a review of London Underground's safety arrangements as part of the rigorous acceptance process for revisions to London Underground's safety case.

Mr. Hurst

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions (1) how many people used the London Underground in each of the years 1971 to 2000; [2506]

(2) what estimate he has made of the number of people who will use the London Underground in the next 10 years. [2507]

Mr. Jamieson

This is an operational matter for London Underground which has provided me with the figures in the tables, which represent the total number of fare-paying passengers who use the Underground network each year.
