To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what progress has been made by his Department in setting compensation claims for those service men and women discriminated against on the basis of their sexuality following the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights. [1215]

Dr. Moonie

Excluding the four cases determined by the European Court of Human Rights, 11 claims have now been settled, by negotiation, at a total cost of £139,250.

Negotiations are still ongoing between the Ministry of Defence's legal advisers and legal representatives acting for the remaining claimants with a view to reaching speedy conclusions to their cases.
