HC Deb 31 January 2001 vol 362 c183W
Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what plans he has to(a) alter and (b) expand barrack accommodation in Scotland; and at which locations. [146175]

Dr. Moonie

[holding answer 22 January 2001]: The major barracks in Scotland are:

  • Fort George, near Inverness;
  • Redford Barracks, Edinburgh;
  • Dreghorn Barracks, Edinburgh;
  • Army Training Regiment and Recruitment Selection Centre at Glencorse, near Edinburgh;
  • Royal Marines Base Condor, Arbroath;
  • HMS Neptune, Faslane;
  • RNAS Prestwick;
  • RAF Kinloss, Moray;
  • RAF Lossiemouth, Moray.

Apart from routine property maintenance, the only plans for significant alterations to, or expansion of, accommodation at these sites involve: The expansion of both administrative and Junior Ranks Single Living Accommodation at Faslane, with the relocation of the Fleet Royal Marine Protection Group from Royal Marine Base Condor. The building of barrack accommodation to replace an existing facility at RAF Lossiemouth in Moray. The Royal Navy will be converting RNAS Prestwick to a Forward Operating Base with effect from April 2002 and in so doing has plans to dispose of one of the two sites at Prestwick, which is known as the Greensite and is surplus accommodation.
