To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people died in each of the last 24 months for which figures are available, broken down by(a) region and (b) age categories (i) 0–64, (ii) 65–74, (iii) 75–84 and (iv) 85 years or above. [146322]

Letter from Len Cook to Mr. Steve Webb, dated 26 January 2001: As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your recent question on the number of people who died in each of the last 24 months for which figures are available, by region and age categories (146322). Figures are provided in the attached table for deaths from August 1998 to July 2000. Figures for deaths occurring in 1998 and 1999 are final. Those for 2000 are revised provisional estimates, based on data available in December 2000. Final figures will be available in October 2001.
