HC Deb 08 January 2001 vol 360 c425W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what percentage of offenders were convicted of further offences during the two year period after they have been released from prison in each of the last five years. [143912]

Mr. Boateng

Two-year reconviction rates for standard list offences following release from prison are shown in the table. The rates are based on a sample of all discharges from prison each year. The 1997 rate is based on a sample of discharges during the first quarter of the year.

About one percentage point of the increase in the rate between 1993 and 1994 can be accounted for by the addition of a number of offences to the standard list. The effect of this change in offence coverage was a little more pronounced on the rate for the 1995 and 1996 data (around 1.4 and 1.9 percentage points respectively).
