HC Deb 27 February 2001 vol 363 c628W
Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what information he has collated about accident rates on the A3 in the Hindhead area in the past three years. [150302]

Mr. Hill

As part of the recently completed road based study of the A3 at Hindhead, accident data were collected for a three-year period from late 1996 to late 1999. There are clusters of accidents on the single-carriageway sections and at the Hindhead crossroads but they are not markedly different from clusters elsewhere on similar roads. The number of accidents along the A3 between the scheme over the past three years is as follows:

Year/location Fatal Serious Slight
1996–97
Single-carriageway section 1 5 24
Hindhead 0 2 1
Total 1 7 25
1997–98
Single-carriageway section 1 5 30
Hindhead 0 0 4
Total 1 5 34
1998–99
Single-carriageway section 0 3 22
Hindhead 0 0 2
Total 0 3 24
