To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what proportion of boards of visitors for prisons in England and Wales were serving magistrates in each of the last five years. [151494]

The proportion of serving magistrates on Boards of Visitors for prisons in England and Wales over the last five years was as follows:

Out of a potential membership of 2,074 there was a total of 342 vacancies on Boards of Visitors in England and Wales as at 16 February 2001. A breakdown is set out in the table:
