HC Deb 26 February 2001 vol 363 cc455-6W
Mr. Oaten

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many cases of litigation are being considered by the ambulance service relating to work injuries sustained by employees; and what has been the cost of such litigation in each of the last five years. [150679]

Ms Stuart

Since 1 April 1999, the National Health Service Litigation Authority has indemnified National Health Service trusts against employers liability claims. There have been 312 such claims against ambulance trusts. Fifty five of these cases have been closed without any payment being made. Two cases were settled during 2000-2001 at a total cost of £4,700. All other cases remain outstanding.

Figures in respect of employer's liability claims brought before 1 April 1999, and in respect of cases settled by National Health Service ambulance trusts without the involvement of the NHS Litigation Authority, are not held centrally.
