§ Mr. Charles Clarke[holding answer 30 January 2001]: The information in the table sets out the number of officers who wen recruited, retired or resigned for the six monthly periods 1 April 1999 to 30 September 2000 and 1 October 1999 to 31 March 2000. The category for "other wastage" includes death, dismissals and departures for other reasons. Because of the way in which the statistics are collected we are unable to provide a breakdown of each of the sub-categories in the "other wastage" column.
