To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many(a) male and (b) female prison inmates in category (i) A, (ii) B, (iii) C and (iv) D, were being held in prisons in England and Wales on 1 January. [149620]

Provisional information showing how many sentenced adult male prisoners are in category A, B, C and D prisons is given in the table. Remand prisoners are not usually categorised except for some remand prisoners held as category A prisoners. 7,857 male prisoners were being held on remand at the end of January. Of these, 241 were being held as category A prisoners.

Women and young offenders may be placed in category A establishments but are otherwise categorised as suitable for open or closed conditions. Provisional information shows that at the end of January 2001 there were three sentenced adult female prisoners and one remand female prisoner in category A prisons. Sixteen male young offenders were also held in category A prisons.
