Dwellings include houseboats, caravans and any other non-building structure used solely as a permanent residence.
Some casualty data have been revised since previous publication to take into account death certificate information provided by ONS and General Registrar Offices (Scotland and NI). Data revised in Home Office Statistical Bulletin, Fire Statistics, UK, 1999 (Issue 20/00).
Up until 1987 data for Isles of Scilly were included with Cornwall.
The brigades in Wales were restructured in April 1996. (North Wales—formerly Clywd and Gwynedd; Mid and West Wales—formerly Dyfed, Powys and West Glamorgan; and South Wales—formerly Gwent, Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan).
Figures from 1994 onwards include late call, heat and smoke incidents. Prior to 1994 these incidents were not recorded.
1999 UK totals are estimated to take account of likely revisions to the data once further information from death certificates etc have been received. No estimates have been made for individual brigade areas.
