To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry by what authority UK Atomic Energy constables are accompanying the shipment of Belgonucleaire/Cogema manufactured mixed oxide fuel from France to Japan. [146905]

[holding answer 24 January 2001]: The UK Government have accepted the responsibility for ensuring that the shipment is undertaken in accordance with our international obligations on nuclear non-proliferation and physical protection of nuclear material, arising from the fact that the transporting vessels fly the British flag. The Director of Civil Nuclear Security has approved a transport plan for this shipment, of which the UKAEA Constables are an essential element. They are deployed with the agreement of the UKAEA.
