HC Deb 07 February 2001 vol 362 cc618-9W
Mr. Hepburn

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many manufacturing jobs have been lost in(a) the Northern Region and (b) the Jarrow constituency, since 1997; and how many manufacturing jobs have been created in (a) the Northern Region and (b) the Jarrow constituency, since 1997. [148610]

Miss Melanie Johnson

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from Len Cook to Mr. Stephen Hepburn, dated 7 February 2001: As National Statistician I have been asked to reply to your recent question about the number of manufacturing jobs that have been lost and created in the Northern Region and Jarrow since 1997 (148610). Information is not available separately for job losses and job gains, but the net effect is measured in the Annual Employment Survey (AES) in September of each year. Between September 1997 and September 1998 (the latest year for which figures are available), the AES shows net increases in the number of employee jobs in manufacturing of 5,200 in the Northern Region and 1,800 in the Jarrow Constituency.
