To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what Government assistance has been provided to(a) General Motors and (b) Vauxhall Motors in the UK in the past five years. [148142]

Mr. Alan Johnson

(a) No Government assistance has been provided to General Motors in the last five years.

(b) Vauxhall Motors have received a total of £10 million Regional Selective Assistance. This was a single offer in support of a project to modernise the Ellesmere Port plant and introduce the new Astra model in 1997. All the grant has been fully drawn down by the company.
