HC Deb 12 December 2001 vol 376 cc931-4W
Mr. Alan Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Health which NHS trusts provide treatment and which health authorities have purchased treatment for individual patients(a) inside and (b) outside their own area, for macular degeneration. [19416]

Jacqui Smith

In 2000–01, there were 3,317 in-patient episodes in England with a primary diagnosis concerning age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The hospital trusts that provided the treatment are given in list 1, the health authorities that purchased treatment from within their own area in list 2, and those that purchased treatment from outside their area in list 3. An appraisal of the use of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of AMD, which is being conducted by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), should be completed in July 2002 provided there are no appeals. NICE' s guidance will provide for a consistent approach to the purchasing of the treatment.
