HC Deb 23 April 2001 vol 367 c78W
Mr. Green

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how many incinerators will need to be constructed over the next 10 years under the Government's waste strategy. [158706]

Mr. Robert Ainsworth

The Government set out their aims and objectives for sustainable waste management in "Waste Strategy 2000", published in May 2000.

The choice of waste facilities is for local councils to take in consultation with their local communities. The Government have no plan for any particular number of incinerators, but recognise that the recovery of energy from waste may have a role to play, alongside recycling and composting, in an integrated waste management plan.
