HL Deb 23 April 2001 vol 625 c12WA
Baroness Byford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When vaccination of milking cows against foot and mouth disease will commence; and whether the animals vaccinated can be used for breeding purposes. [HL1533]

Baroness Hayman

We are actively considering the use of vaccination as a disease control measure. Vaccination is not a substitute for our current slaughter policy and would only be a tool as part of this approach. European Commission rules would enable vaccinated animals to be used for breeding purposes subject to certain conditions which are set out in the Decision of the EC Standing Veterinary Committee of 28 March.
