To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what his Department's total gross running costs were for travel, including fares, subsistence, accommodation and other expenses met from public funds, but excluding such cost for journeys and stays exclusively within the United Kingdom, in the(a) three years ending 30 April 1997 and (b) 12 months ending 30 April 1997. Information regarding expenses met from public funds for periods prior to April 1996 is not readily available. The amount met from public funds for the 12-month period ended 30 April 1997 was £2,602,103.29.
