Further to the Written Answer by Lord Bassam of Brighton on 16 March (WA 115), how many prisoners are currently held in excess of the in-use certified normal accommodation; and in which prisons are these conditions obtaining. [HL1396]

The number of prisoners held in excess of the in-use certified normal accommodation at the end of February 2001 was 4,362. The prisons concerned are listed in the table. These data are provisional but are not expected to alter significantly.
