To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many people in the constituency of Crewe and Nantwich have benefited from(a) disabled students' allowances, (b) the New Deal for lone parents, (c) the New Deal for partners of unemployed people, (d) the New Deal for people aged 25 plus, (e) the New Deal for young people, (f) Jobseeker's Allowance and (g) jobfinder's grant since May 1997. (a) In the academic year 1997–98, 81 disabled students' allowances worth £110,488 were paid to students from Cheshire. Figures are not available for subsequent years.

  1. (b) During the period October 1998 to December 2000, 272 people in Crewe and Nantwich have joined New Deal for lone parents. This has resulted in 119 people moving into employment during the same period.
  2. (c) Constituency level figures for New Deal for partners are not yet available.
  3. (d) In Crewe and Nantwich, from July 1998 to January 2001, 355 people joined New Deal for people aged 25 plus. 70 people left the programme for jobs.
  4. (e) 826 young people in Crewe and Nantwich have entered New Deal for young people during the period April 1998 to January 2001. 423 of these have found employment.
  5. (f) The only available constituency level Jobseekers Allowance statistics are based on a 5 per cent. sample of the population. As a broad indication, 2,800 people in the Crewe and Nantwich constituency have claimed Jobseeker's Allowance since May 1997. This does not include people who receive nil benefit who sign on for National Insurance credits only.
  6. (g) Constituency figures for jobfinder's grant are not available. However in the North West Employment Service Region, from April 1997 to February 2001, 27,262 people have received assistance from the jobfinder's grant.
