To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police officers(a) left and (b) joined the profession in each of the last 10 years. [140797]

[holding answer 29 November, 2000]: The information requested is set out in the table. Before April 1995 information was collected on a calendar year basis. From April 1995 it has been done on a financial year basis. The table reflects the different collection periods.

Police numbers for September 2000 are currently being validated and we hope to publish them within the next few weeks.
