To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department how many(a) barristers and (b) solicitors have been appointed Circuit Judges in the last five years who have not sat previously as recorders.[140847]

During the period 27 November 1995 to 28 November 2000 the total number of circuit judge appointments was 186. Out of this figure,

  1. (a) three barristers, and
  2. (b) four solicitors

had not sat previously as recorders, although all but one had other judicial experience prior to appointment.
