To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many(a) nurses and (b) doctors have been recruited into the NHS in each of the last three years. [139046]

In 1997 there were 318,860 qualified nurses in the National Health Service. This increased to 323,460 in 1998 and 329,640 in 1999.

In 1997 there were 89,620 qualified doctors in the NHS. This increased to 91,840 in 1998 and 93,980 in 1999.
