HL Deb 13 November 2000 vol 619 cc17-8WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the Government of Sierra Leone have informed them of plans to to hold a general election in April 2001; and, if this appears to be unfeasible because rebels are still in control of most of the territory, what arrangements that government intend to make for the lawful administration of the country following the expiry of their term of office. [HL4512]

Baroness Scotland of Asthal

A number of elections, including presidential and parliamentary, are due to take place in Sierra Leone in early 2001 in accordance with the constitution.

A decision on whether to proceed on this timing is a matter for the Government of Sierra Leone. There is provision for the extension of the government's mandate under emergency powers.
