Further to the Written Answer by Baroness Scotland of Asthal on 26 October 1999 (WA 22–3), whether they are yet in a position to say why the United Kingdom is not a signatory to the Optional Protocol of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations concerning Acquisition of Nationality. [HL2226]
§ Baroness Scotland of AsthalFCO research indicates that the UK originally chose not to become a party to the Optional Protocol on the Acquisition of Nationality for two main reasons:
- (i) It was felt that nationality provisions were out of place in a convention dealing with privileges and immunities; and
- (ii) It was considered preferable to rely on the general rules of customary international law in this area.
