HC Deb 07 March 2000 vol 345 c633W
Mr. Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many animal experiments were carried out at Porton Down in the last year for which figures are available. [111940]

Dr. Moonie

[holding answer 1 March 2000]This is a matter for the Chief Executive of the Defence Executive Research Agency. I have asked the Chief Executive to write to the hon. Member.Letter from Sir John Chisholm to Mr. Norman Baker, dated 7 March 2000: I have been asked to reply to your question about the number of animal experiments carried out at Porton Down in the last year for which figures are available. In 1999, the number of procedures undertaken using animals at DERA's Chemical and Biological Defence Sector at Porton Down was 11501 (1 animal = I procedure; but note that individual animals may take part in several procedures). This figure reflects the information provided to the Home Office. I hope this is helpful.
