§ Angela EagleAll local authorities have the power to offer administrative penalties to those shown to be claiming Housing Benefit fraudulently, as an alternative to criminal proceedings. From 1999–2000, local authorities have been asked to provide data on the number of penalties offered. These figures are not yet available.
