HC Deb 07 June 2000 vol 351 c263W
17. Mr. McWalter

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what assessment she has made of the effectiveness of development moneys provided to Mozambique to remedy flood damage. [123187]

Clare Short

We have a permanent office in Mozambique, which was strengthened following the floods to allow constant monitoring and ensure effective use of funds. All reports to date indicate that the UK-funded relief and rehabilitation activities are being well managed.

In May, the Government of Mozambique held a conference to present to the international community reconstruction needs following the floods. Donors responded by pledging over USD453 million to support these efforts. We have provided support to the United Nations Development Programme for a project to assist the Mozambican authorities with the effective prioritisation and channelling of donor reconstruction contributions. We will continue to monitor progress over the coming months.
