HL Deb 05 June 2000 vol 613 c115WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will propose to the United Nations Security Council, as suggested by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Executive Secretary Lansana Konyate, that the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone's mandate should be amended to allow it to take offensive action against armed opposition in Sierra Leone. [HL2530]

Baroness Scotland of Asthal

The United Nations Secretary General, in his fourth report on the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone, dated 19 May, assesses that the current UNAMSIL mandate, under UN Secretary Council Resolution 1289, remains sufficient for the time being. But we are keeping the situation under careful review.
