To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office how many people have been dismissed from Government service in each of the last five years, broken down by principal cause of dismissal; and what proportion of total Government employees this represents in each year. [122514]

Mr. Stringer

The numbers and proportion of staff dismissed from the non-industrial Civil Service over the last five years, by principal cause of dismissal are set out in the table.

Marjorie Mowlam

The Prime Minister commissioned the Performance and Innovation Unit to carry out a study into the "Pursuit and Seizure of Criminal Assets" last year. This was announced on 21 October 1999,Official Report, column 630W, by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister, in reply to a question from my hon. Friend the Member for Stafford (Mr. Kidney). My right hon. Friend the Minister of State, Cabinet Office is sponsor Minister for this study.

The study, which is now nearing completion, has had the strong support of my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary and the Minister of State, Home Office, my hon. Friend the Member for Norwich, South (Mr. Clarke). Home Office officials have been closely involved, as have officials of other Government Departments. The final report will be published shortly and copies will be placed in the Libraries of the House.
