HC Deb 28 July 2000 vol 354 c1171W
Dr. Kumar

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many women committed suicide(a) among the Asian community and (b) in the white community in each of the last 10 years; and if he will make a statement. [131253]

Miss Melanie Johnson

I have been asked to reply.

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from Len Cook to Dr. Ashok Kumar, dated 28 July 2000: As National Statistician I have been asked to reply to your recent question asking how many women committed suicide (a) among the Asian community and (b) in the white community in each of the last 10 years. (131253). Ethnicity is not recorded at death registration. Information collected at death registration relates to country of birth. However country of birth would not detect the generations of Asians that were born within the U.K. or those members of the white ethnic group that were born in Asian countries, and therefore suicide figures for ethnic groups are not available.
