Mr. Chope

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what the average percentage increase in SSA will be in(a) urban, (b) rural and (c) all police authorities in England in 2000–02 as a result of his announcements on departmental spending. [132325]

Mr. Charles Clarke

[holding answer 24 July 2000]: Police Standard Spending Assessment (SSA), for England and Wales for the current financial year amounts to £3,533 million. As a result of the increases in police funding announced in the Spending Review 2000, the provisional SSA figure for 2001–02 will be £3,842 million, an increase of 8.7 per cent.

Figures for individual police authorities will be announced at the time of the local authority settlement in the autumn when the SSA provision will be adjusted to take account of expenditure on behalf of forces to be incurred centrally.
