§ Miss Melanie Johnson[holding answer 4 July 2000]: The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician. I have asked him to reply.
Letter from Len Cook to Mr. Tim Loughton, dated 28 July 2000
As National Statistician I have been asked to reply to your recent question about jobs created in metropolitan boroughs and the rest of the UK since May 1997.Information is not available for job gains or losses. However, the Annual Employment Survey (AES) can provide the net change in the number of employee jobs between 1997 and 1998. The data collected from this survey is for Employee Jobs only. This means that other employment components are excluded (i.e. jobs in Self-employment, Government-supported trainees, and HM Forces). This information is shown in the attached table for metropolitan boroughs and the remainder of Great Britain. The AES does not collect Northern Ireland data. The AES sample is drawn from the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR). The 1998 survey comprised 65,000 enterprises, covering nearly half a million workplaces.
