HC Deb 27 January 2000 vol 343 c304W
Mr. Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what proportion of programmes broadcast by Channel 5 in 1999 were of European origin as defined within EU Directive 89/552/EC. [106966]

Janet Anderson

Provisional figures for 1999 indicate Channel 5 continued to meet the requirement in the European Broadcasting Directive 89/552/EC, as amended by Directive 97/36/EC, for the majority of transmission time to be devoted to works of European origin. The initial figures indicate that 53 per cent. of broadcast time on Channel 5, excluding advertisements, sports, news, games and teletext services, was devoted to works of European origin. The final figure will be published later this year by the Independent Television Commission.
